The National Arboretum Canberra aims to become one of the great arboreta in the world; a place of outstanding natural beauty, community amenity and scientific value.
The National Arboretum Canberra is home to 94 forests of rare, endangered and symbolic trees from Australia and around the world. More than 48,000 trees grow on the 250 hectare (618 acres or 2.5 million square metres) site, with species from over 100 countries represented.
Located at the western end of Lake Burley Griffin, just six kilometres from the centre of Canberra, the Arboretum offers panoramic views over Canberra, Lake Burley Griffin and the mountains beyond. How to get to the National Arboretum.
Enjoy a free guided walk with one of our friendly and knowledgeable volunteers from the Friends of the Arboretum, or take a self-guided walk, meandering through the forests. At the Village Centre, relax and refresh at Sprout Cafe or The Conservatory Restaurant, browse in the Arboretum shop, discover the stories behind the forests in the information displays, explore Pod Playground and the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection.
Open Hours Details
The Arboretum offers group and school tours and activities, as well as a public program of events, talks and courses.
The Village Centre, gift shop, and the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection are open daily from 9 am until 4 pm Monday to Sunday. Closed Christmas Day.
The Arboretum grounds are open daily from 6 am until 8.30 pm during Eastern Daylight Saving Time and 7 am until 5.30 pm during Non Daylights Savings Time (Eastern Standard Time).
Sprout Cafe is open from 9 am to 4 pm Monday to Sunday. No bookings are required.
The Conservatory Restaurant is open for:
lunch from 12 noon until 2 pm daily.
breakfast from 7 am until 11 am Saturday and Sunday only (not available on public holidays).
