Queen Elizabeth II Island

Queen Elizabeth II Island (formerly known as Aspen Island) on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra.

Queen Elizabeth II Island is an artificial island located within Lake Burley Griffin

The site of the National Carillon, the island was created during the construction of the Lake in an effort to reduce the power of the inflow from East Basin.

Aspen Island on Lake Burley Griffin was renamed in honour of Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee in June 2022

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the name change.

"Given the National Carillon was officially opened by Her Majesty in 1970, it is only fitting that Aspen Island should be renamed in recognition of her many years of service to Australia," Mr Morrison said.

"This ceremony will also include dedicating the new Queen Elizabeth Water Gardens, which will transform the nearby foreshore as well as improve water quality."

The Platinum Jubilee celebrates the Queen's 70 years of service to Australia and the Commonwealth.

Celebrations will also include the lighting of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Beacon in Canberra, the release of commemorative stamps and coins, as well as illuminating monuments across Australia.
