McGrath Foundation

McGrath Foundation

The McGrath Foundation was co-founded by Jane McGrath and her cricketing husband Glenn after Janes diagnosis and initial recovery from breast cancer.

While being treated for a secondary cancer in 2003, Jane had access to a breast care nurse for the first time and became aware of the huge impact that they can have on a patients physical and mental wellbeing during and after treatment.

Jane said at the time that it was like having someone holding her hand through one of the worst nightmares in her life while allowing her to voice a lot of her frustrations and emotions to someone outside her immediate family; as well as having someone who could give informed and knowledgeable answers to her many questions.

Approached by publishers Random House to write a book together about their experiences with breast cancer, Jane and Glenn wrote A Love For Life, a heartfelt and moving story told from each of their perspectives.

When Random House offered to donate proceeds from the book sales to charity, Jane and Glenn decided to set up the McGrath Foundation with an aim to provide funding for breast care nurses on a national basis and provide greater public awareness of breast cancer, particularly amongst younger women.

Today, the McGrath Foundation is managed by Janes long time friend Tracy Bevan. Wife of Australian cricket legend Michael, Tracy agreed to run the Foundation because of the friendship and love she had for the McGrath family.

Traveling widely across the country, Tracy speaks to a wide variety of groups and individuals raising awareness of breast cancer, generating support and raising money for the McGrath Foundation to fund specialist breast care nurses in areas without current access to them.

The McGrath Foundation has been very fortunate to secure several major sponsors who have donated, and continue to donate generously, allowing the Foundation to continue its awareness raising activities and supply hospitals and health organisations with the funds required to train and employ specialist breast care nurses.
