Music on Australian television |
In 2017, we celebrated 30 years of RAGE which brought back memories of other music television shows.
In the days before video clips shows featured artists performing live and miming songs. With the advent of music videos shows combined film clips with with live acts (e.g. Countdown). Then the trend moved to shows with music videos (e.g. Rage and AMV).
Many early shows (1950-1960) were local productions like Accent on Strings Campfire Favourites Teenage Mailbag The Hit Parade Juke Box Saturday Night often featuring Australian artists performing international hits.
The first big TV shows were Bandstand (1958-1972) hosted by Brian Henderson on Channel 9, Six O'Clock Rock (1959-1962), The Johnny O'Keefe Show / Sing Sing Sing (1962-1965) both featuring our first star Johnny O'Keefe. The Go!! Show (1964-1967) was big in Melbourne as was Kommotion (1964-67) hosted by Ken Sparkes. Another big show to feature a local star was It's All Happening in Sydney with Billy Thorpe.
Countdown (1974-1987), Nightmoves (1977-1986) hosted by Lee Simon, Rock Arena (1982-1989), Music Video (1983-1987), Video Hits (1987-2011), RAGE (1987-current) on the ABC, a local MTV (1987-1992) on Nine hosted by Richard Wilkins and many others.
Music on Australian television is not complete without mentioning "talent"shows including the likes of Stairway to the Stars, TV Stars of Tomorrow, New Faces, Young Talent Time, Pot of Gold Australian, Idol The X Factor and The Voice.
